Why is it necessary to use oil in conjunction with the oil immersion lens and not the other objectives?

Generally oil is only used with 100x or higher. This is due to the very high magnification achieved by that particular objective and as such, it lets in less light. The oil creates a meniscus between the objective and the slide such that the light coming through the sample is reflected internally within the oil and is transmitted to the eyepiece.
